| Born and raised in Houghton, Mi. Son of Emille Roy of Quebec, Canada and Marie Louise Brule of Lake Linden Mi. Leo "Dago" Roy went to Houghton High School where he was a all star football and hockey star. He graduated from high school in 1926. Mr. Roy played for the Michigan Tech 1st. Midwest Intercollegiate Hockey championship team as a center and wing man. In 1932 he married Dorthy Louise MacDonald of Ontonagon, Mi. Together they established the Leo H. Roy Insurance Agency in Hancock and remained in business for over 50 years. In 1948 Mr.Roy was elected State Senator a office he held for 10 years retiring in 1958. Mr. Roy was instrumental in acquiring the funding for the Mackinac Straits Bridge appropriations bill, he was instrumental in getting the funding for the State Tuberculosis Sanatorium and the St. Joesph's Medical Center in Hancock, for five years he worked to get the first artificial ice plant for the Dee Stadium for Michighan Tech College in Houghton. He also aquired funding for Isle Royale National Park, Fort Wilkins state park and McLain, Baraga, Porcupine Mountain state parks. Mr. also played hockey for several (7) semi-pro hockey teams in the Houghton area, 1926-36. Mr Leo H. Roy played a vital part in processing the new Portage Lake Lift Bridge project as he was state senator at the time, the bridge dedication was held on 6-27-60. Mr Roy was honored by being the master of ceremonies. Senator Roy, along with Congressman Bennett, met with President Eisenhower 7-19-55 to discuss plans for the new bridge. Leo H. Roy passed away on 9-11-68. His full life history will be on display this summer in "Dee Stadium" Houghton Mi. With hundreds of photo's and newspaper clipping's representing Senator Roy's life. | |
